MICHIGAN CITY, a city in Laporte co., Ind., on Lake Michigan, and on the Père Marquette, the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville, the Lake Erie and Western, and the Michigan Central railroads; 56 miles E. of Chicago. Here are the Northern Indiana State Prison, a United States life-saving station, public library, waterworks, street railroad and electric light plants, public and parochial schools, National and State banks, and several daily and weekly newspapers. It has large interests in lumber, iron ore, and salt, and manufactures cars, chairs, etc. It has an outer or refuge harbor created by the Federal Government. Pop. (1910) 19,027; (1920) 19,457.
