NEWPORT, a town in Monmouthshire, England, 145 miles W. of London. Being one of the principal outlets for the produce of the extensive collieries and iron and steel works in the vicinity, its shipping trade has of late years greatly increased, and with it, as a result, its dock accommodation, which now covers more than 80 acres. Newport has manufactures of india-rubber, gutta-percha, and railway and telegraph plants and wagons, and several important brass and iron foundries are in operation, as well as breweries and pottery works. On Nov. 4, 1839, the town was the center of a Chartist outbreak. Pop. (1917) 82,709.
