Academy, musical. The first institution of a musical academy in England took place in the year 1710, at the Crown and Anchor Tavern. It consisted both of professors and non-professors, assisted by the gentlemen of the Chapel Royal, and the children of the several choirs, and was con-ducted on an extensive scale, and in the most respectable style. Since that time, several others have taken place on various plans ; among which, one of the most successful, at least for a time, was that established by Giardini, about the year 1750
