Ashley, General, a celebrated English violinist. His father was the manager of the oratorios at Covent Garden Theatre, which performances he led with great ability for many years. After his death, his sons, General and Charles Ashley, succeeded him as joint managers General Ashley was educated in music under Giardini and Barthelemon, and was esteemed an excellent performer on his instrument. He was considered also as the best modern judge of violins and violoncellos ; of which, in the latter years of his life, he had a very valuable collection. He died near London in 1818.
