It is a comfortable theory, and explains much. . . . But being for the first time in the Presence of the disease, he could not diagnose it. He said, “I am interested”—and flattered himself on his scientific attitude. Whereas he should have said, “I am in love,” and abased himself before the commonest of all disorders.
