"The Dead Man's Chest", also called "Fifteen Men on the Dead Man's Chest", originated as a fictional sea-song written by Robert Louis Stevenson as part of his 1883 novel Treasure Island. Young E. Allison expanded this song into a poem of several stanzas, which was published with the title "Derelict" in the Louisville Courier-Journal in 1891. Allison continued to revise and expand "Derelict" throughout his lifetime. Other authors have also created their own versions based on either Allison's poem or on the original lines by Stevenson.
