Fantasy.

The Poplars on the highway,
Court ladies all a-row,
Bowed whispering "May good fortune
Attend the way you go."

I left my home in the sunshine,
I rode in a coach and four,
But now with the world behind me,
I creep to my father's door.

And the Poplars in the night-wind
Rock groaning to and fro,
They hiss like village gossips,
"'Tis right the world should know."

Germany, June, 1855.
