DRONE, in natural history, a species of bee, which is nearly double the size of the common working insect. The head of drones is round, the eyes full, their tongue short, and the belly broader than in the other classes; they are likewise of a darker colour, and more thickly clothed.—See Bee, vol. i. p. 215.
