72.MAY ROSES

With the sweetest hours of May
Come the wild red roses;
Thick throughout the meadow-hay
Wine-bright bloom uncloses.

Yet my heart is sorrowing,
Full of grief unsleeping;
In a green hill-plot in spring
I have sat a-weeping.

For the tears I shed to-day
Fall upon the roses
That, in sweetest hours of May,
One grave's grass encloses.

From the Dutch of Didericus Dorbeck.
