33.TIME

Nestlings are husht in sleep. Without a sound
Night folds the faint earth in her dewy breast;
Her brooding bosom wraps its darkness round
Save for dim starlight in the drowsy west.

Yet in her midnight veins throbs vaguely dark
A mystic, speechless sense of fate and crime,
For in that sleeping present pulses stark
The ineluctable intent of Time.

From the Serbo-Croatian of Mileta Jakšić.
