CAPUT XVI

Đys [godspel] sceal on wōdnesdæg on þǣre eahtoðan wucan ofer pentecosten.

1. And þā genēalǣhton him tō Farisei and Saducei, and hyne costodon and bǣdon þæt hē him sum tācen of heofone ætȳwde.[1]

2. Þā andswarode hē him and cwæð, On ǣfen gē cweðaþ, Tō morgen hyt byþ smylte weder; þēs heofon ys rēad.[2]

3. And on morgen gē cweþað, Tō dæg hyt byþ hrēoh weder; þēos lyft scīnð unwederlīce. Nū cunne gē tōcnāwan heofones hīw; witodlīce gē ne magon witan þǣra tīda tācnu.[3]

4. Sēo yfele cnēoryss and unrihthǣmende tācen sēcþ; and hyre ne byð geseald būton Ionas tācen þæs wītegan. And him forlǣtenum, hē fērde.[4]

5. And þā his leorningcnihtas cōmon ofer þone mūþan, hig forgēton þæt hig hlāfas nāmon.[5]

6. And þā sǣde hē, Gȳmað and warniað fram beorman Fariseorum and Saduceorum.

7. Þā ðōhton hig betwux him and cwǣdon, [Ne] nāmon wē hlāfas mid ūs.[6]

8. Þā sē Hǣlend wiste hyra geþancas, hē cwæþ tō him, Hwæt þence gē betwux ēow, lȳtles gelēafan, þæt gē hlāfas nabbað?[7]

9. Ne understande gē gȳt, nē gē ne geþenceað þǣra fīf hlāfa and fīf þūsend manna, and hū fela wyligena gē nāmon?[8]

10. Nē þǣra seofon hlāfa and fēower þūsend manna, and hū fela wyligena gē nāman?[9]

11. Hwī ne ongyte gē gȳt þæt ic ne sǣde be hlāfe, Warniað fram ðām beorman Fariseorum and Saduceorum?

12. Þā ongēton hig þæt hē ne sǣde, Warniað fram hlāfa beorman, ac fram lāre Fariseorum and Saduceorum.[10]

13. Witodlīce þā cōm sē Hǣlend on þā dǣles Cesareæ Philippi, and āhsode hys leorningcnihtas, Hwæne secgeað menn þæt sȳ mannes Sunu?[11]

14. Đā cwǣdon hig, Sume, Iohannem þone fulluhtere; sume, Heliam; sume, Hieremiam, oðþe ān þǣra wītegyna.[12]

15. Đā sǣde hē, Hwæt secge gē þæt ic sī?

16. Đā andswarode him Petrus, Đū eart þæs lyfigendes Godes Sunu.[13]

17. Þā andswarode him sē Hǣlend, Ēadig eart þū, Simon, culfran bearn; for þām hit þē ne onwrēah flǣsc nē blōd, ac mīn Fæder þe on heofenum ys.[14]

18. And ic secge þē þæt þū eart Petrus, and ofer þisne stān ic timbrige mīne cyricean; and helle gatu ne magon ongēn þā.[15]

19. And þē ic sylle heofona rīces cǣgia: and swā hwæt swā þū ofer eorþan gebindst, þæt byþ on heofonum gebunden; and swā hwæt swā þū unbindst ofer eorþan, þæt byð unbunden on heofonum. [16]

20. Þā bebēad sē Hǣlend hys leorningcnihtum þæt hig nānum menn ne sǣdon þæt hē wǣre Hǣlend Crīst.[17]

21. Syððan hē ongan swutelian hys leorningcnihtum þæt hē wolde faran tō Hierusalem, and fela þinga þolian fram yldrum, and bōcerum, and ealdormannum þǣra sācerda, and bēon ofslegen, and þȳ þryddan dæge ārīsan.[18]

22. And þā genam Petrus hyne onsundron, and cwæð tō him, Drihten, ne gewurþe þæt.[19]

23. Þā beseah hē hyne, and cwæð tō Petre, Gang bæftan mē, Satanas; wiþerrǣde þū eart mē, for þām þū nāst þā þing þe synd Godes, ac þā þe synt manna.[20]

24. Þā sǣde sē Hǣlend hys leorningcnihtum, Gyf hwā wylle fyligean mē, wiþsace hyne sylfne, and nyme hys rōde, and mē fylige.[21]

25. Sōþlīce sē þe wyle hys sāwle hāle gedōn, hē hig forspilþ; and sē þe wyle hig for mē forspyllan sē hig fint.

26. Hwæt fremað ǣnegum menn, þēah hē ealne middaneard gestrȳne, gyf hē hys sāwle forwyrd þolað? Oððe hwylc gewrixl sylþ sē mann for hys sāwle?[22]

27. Witodlīce mannes Sunu ys tō cumenne on hys Fæder wuldre mid hys englum; and þonne āgylt ǣghwylcum be hys āgenum weorce.[23]
