Dr. Robert Donovan Of U.C.D. Passes Away
The death occurred unexpectedly in Dublin, to-day, of Professor Robert Donovan, the professor of English literature in the National University, Dublin.
Professor Donovan was a native of Leighlin Bridge, County Carlow, and graduate of the old Royal University of Ireland. He embarked early on a journalistic career, and was on the staff of the "Nation" under T. W. Sullivan. Later he joined the staf of the "Freeman's Journal" as a leader-writer ad won distinction for his clear and forcible exposition of the Irish cause He served as Secreary to tegh National Unviersity Commissioners in 1908, and was appointed Professor if English Literature at the establishment of the University College in 1910. He was Chair of the Free State Committee on the Publication and Sale of Indecent Literature in 1927.
On the Committee's recommendation the Free State Board of Censorship of Publications was established.
