Up in the oak tree a dove wailed—
Below, a brooklet muttered—
Don’t wonder, when I was to speak,
That not a word I uttered.

Can he speak from all his soul’s depth
Who does in strange lands wander?
And man’s too human that he should
At paradise not wonder.
