Give Our Flag to the Breeze! A New National Song, written and composed by
John H. Hewitt, Esq.,
of Richmond.
1.
Give our Flag to the breeze—let it bask in the light, Like a rainbow of glory at eve;
’Tis the pride of the Southron,—his symbol of might, ’Tis a web which an angel might weave.
Lo! freely it waves, with its red and white bars, The rallying sign of the free;
A bright beam of hope from its clustering stars, A hale round young Liberty! Chorus.—Then, huzza! huzza! huzza! Chorus.—Long, long may our proud banner wave, Chorus.—The dread of oppressors—the pride of the world, Chorus.—The hope of the stalwart and free!
2.
It shall lead our battalions through carnage and fire, While the dying its beauty shall bless;
And beneath its proud folds shall the free soul expire,
While his lips the bright galaxy press.
For ages the nations of earth shall confirm The truth of our people’s decree;
Though tyrants may vaunt while they tread on the worm, Yet, its sting lives with young Liberty. Chorus.—Then, huzza! &c.
3.
Already the halo of victory beams Round the ensign of red, white and blue;
The blood of our foemen has darken’d our streams, And his helmet is cloven in two.
For aye be it thus, while in right there is might, On God crowns the strife of the free;
And for aye wave our Flag in the sun’s golden light, The beacon of young Liberty! Chorus.—Then, huzza! &c.
