This was the first hymn that Havergal wrote. There is a story that she was inspired by Domenico Fetti's paint­ing Ec­ce Ho­mo (at the time attributed to a "Sternburg") and used the painting's Latin caption as the hymn's original title: "I did this for thee; what hast thou done for Me?"
