John McCrae

This war poem was written on May 3, 1915 after McCrae presided over the funeral of his friend and fellow soldier Alexis Helmer. McCrae worked on the poem for several months and it was first published anonymously in Punch on December 8, 1915. The poem has become a prominent symbol of remembrance in the Commonwealth of Nations, especially Canada, as well as in the United States.
