List of Contributors
[edit]Thoughts on whether the list of contributors at Page:A Dictionary of Music and Musicians vol 1.djvu/11 and Page:A Dictionary of Music and Musicians vol 1.djvu/12. Should they be wikilinked to WP, or should be looking to create author pages at WS? -- billinghurst (talk) 10:56, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
- At risk of broadening the scope of the project (but what do we do better at Wikisource?), I lean towards the creation of author pages. They'd provide nice pointers for any individuals interested in expanding Wikisource's body of works on music. Also I feel kinda icky about not giving author pages to folks who have in substantial part authored a work hosted on Wikisource. Prosody (talk) 06:33, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
- We do that for Wikisource:WikiProject DNB and it is a substantial task [says he who has done it in depth and not yet finished]. I am happy with that as course of actionlong as we are not too anal about it, and that the potential is there for a project to manage it at some point in time. -- billinghurst (talk) 08:16, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
What to do with the musical notation?
[edit]In the few pages massaged of the main body of text, this issue has been put off. But it's an obviously significant one. Unfortunately, Wikisource doesn't really have any good mechanism for dealing with it. There are two choices:
- Crop them from the image, maybe run them through a cleaner program like paper.
- Retranscribe them via linked method.
2 is 'nicer,' and comes with nice advantages per the linked, but at the cost of much more effort. Prosody (talk) 06:33, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
- I shut my eyes and skip to the next page. While 2) is nicer, I say go for 1), or 0) just transcribe/proof the text at this moment. I would think that it would again need a project to manage it at a later point in time. The work as PotM has given some good pointers about developments needed to handle music works for those who don't normally list it as a special interest. -- billinghurst (talk) 08:21, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
- If they were transcribed, what notation should be used? Musicxml? abc? --SoftlySaid (talk) 15:34, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
- Unresolved issue , for which no one has stepped up to the plate, and we are in need of a (h)expert. From me you get a big <shrug>, as I know nothing about either. Anything that you can bring to the discussion would be very welcome. -- billinghurst (talk) 20:02, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Cleaning application: Paper?
[edit]From dot point 1). New to me, got further information? billinghurst (talk)
- Sorry, should have read unpaper]. It and imagemagick could be used to batch produce a source for higher quality sheet music images. Prosody (talk) 09:04, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
How to section?
[edit]Anyone got thoughts on how this work should be sectionalised, and possibly presented in the main namespace. Some options ...
- Page per article, hence sections around each, easier for adding x-refs now
- Groups/clumps of articles, with some sort of logical breaks
-- billinghurst (talk) 14:11, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
- Follow-up. [Quick IRC conversation with Zyephyrus] Article per page is going to be intense, so maybe for the moment, we can start by placing anchors at the start of each article. -- billinghurst (talk)
Test 1: a complete list of all the words of the Dictionary?
[edit]General Index | Volume 2 > |
PROVISIONAL TABLE OF WORDS IN THE FIRST TOME
[edit]- A.
- AARON (correctly Aron), Pietro
- ABACO, Evaristo Felice dall',
- A BATTUTA
- ABBÉ, Philippe Pierre de St. Sevin and Pierre de St. Sevin,
- ABBEY, JOHN
- ABBREVIATIONS.
Test 2: list of words (alphabetical index)
[edit]General Index | Volume 2 > |
Alphabetical Index - A
[edit]- A.
- AARON (correctly Aron), Pietro
- ABACO, Evaristo Felice dall',
- A BATTUTA
- ABBÉ, Philippe Pierre de St. Sevin and Pierre de St. Sevin,
- ABBEY, JOHN
- ABBREVIATIONS.
Do you think that we can try one of these lists? Or both? Other ideas? --Zyephyrus (talk) 21:59, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
- I have tried a LST (labeled section transclusion) with Abaco: is this what you intend to do? --Zyephyrus (talk) 09:41, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
- In terms of presentation, I prefer the second.
- At the end of Page:A Dictionary of Music and Musicians vol 4.djvu/837 there is an index to the four vols. and catalogue of articles contributed by each writer. Not sure whether that makes things better or worse.
- The other way to present may be present AA...-ADx... on a page, and link to the generic page with an anchor #Abaco. -- billinghurst (talk) 11:58, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
- Just tripped across the template {{Pright}} and that, or a variation of it, may be useful as part of our presentation, delineation and anchor built together would be useful, especially around indices. Even something with a built in #switch could be quite neat.-- billinghurst (talk) 07:47, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, perfect, very useful! So all right for them. Will we use LST for the articles or only anchors? --Zyephyrus (talk) 09:57, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

- For ease, and with many being short articles, I suggest that we use anchors, and transclude pages in manageable clumps, with sensible break points (as yet undetermined, maybe A-Aa, Ab, Ac, Ad, Ae ???, skip those that don't exist, and mega articles we will spawn out, eg. Beethoven is rumoured to be big).
- While I have a basic preference for articles, for this baby, in this method, I think it is just getting too hard and unmanageable. Managing KISS principle here. billinghurst (talk) 10:17, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Had a rough play.
- Note, I used a switch to turn off the grey label in the PAGE namespace on the first entry only
Definitely some potential, and depends on how we like to set up the display in the main namespace. I am presuming that in the Page namespace, that we would just want anchors, and in the main namespace, we are wanting a little fancier. Maybe not. -- billinghurst (talk) 12:55, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
