Editions are very similar; I started digitizing the oldest on the grounds that I could then modify it into later editions. But really digitizing them in any order would work just as well. - That seems like an excellent reason. Here's the better scan uploaded, Commons:File:IMSLP278935-PMLP144608-the dancing master10.pdf, but I'm not sure how to swap it out. I'll try to get around to figuring it out.

Playfordthey published 18 editions between 1651 and 1728, some of them in in up to four versions. - https://playforddances.com/indexes/publication-information/
- If we want to include all the dances in those 18+, almost all would be covered with three texts; the first edition, the 1689 edition, and the 18th edition.
This will omit only 6 dances, found only in the following editions: Silver Faulken, The 2Touch and Take 2-3Dunkirk 3ABellamira 7CCornish Squire, The 9A-9BYoung Sir Solomon 9B- The later versions may be better, as in this version of Love Lies a-bleeding with better dance instructions.
If I had a scan of the 1689 edition, which is very similar to this one, I'd suggest replacing this scan with that, instead. - Of course, well after Playford's death they published
about fivemore versions, if I understand this correctly, containing a lot of new dances: https://playforddances.com/publication-information-23/ I'm inclined to ignore those for now. - Thank you for the sueful information; iI will do that in future. Thank you also for the undeserved praise; it seems I got it all wrong!
- By taking the 1686 edition (which you just kindly subbed in the new scan for) instead of the 1689 edition I think we omit only one piece, "The Mask" (found in 7B-16, but not in the 18th ed.). So I withdraw my statement that the 1689 would in theory be better; it would not really, and the 1686 has the advantage in being the last the original compiler worked on. There is a copy of the 17th edition here: https://imslp.org/wiki/File:PMLP144608-bim_eighteenth-century_the-dancing-master-vol_1721.pdf The 17th and 18th editions (1721 and ~1728) seems to contain identical sets of pieces.

- The 1686 edition was the last one John Playford supervised, and it is thought he died that year; after that, things passed to his son Henry (with the assistance John Playford's nephew, a printer also called John Playford); in 1694, Henry he sold the copyrights to someone named Heppinstall,[1] but continued as publisher (?) until 1706, when a John Young took over for the 13th ed.. It seems that two more volumes were added to Playford's dances, the second in 1713 and the third in 1719.[2]
- So once we get the 1651 and 1686 ones done, the 1721 17th ed would be a logical next step, as would the second and third volumes. I think it would be an excellent use of Template:Auxiliary Table of Contents to index all of the distinct dances (some of which are known under multiple names) in all the versions.
- I rather gave up on this because of the bug with enabling the older notations, intending to come back when the bug is fixed. But I'm delighted to see others working on it! HLHJ (talk) 20:58, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
Figure tables
[edit]Thank you for working on this, CalendulaAsteraceae. Re [3], reducing it any more ruins the proportions of the circle. While it's not as compact as the original, and it isn't vertically centered the same way, I can't see an obvious way to improve it. I'm not sure how to put an alt text on it, either. - That looks much better! I think spaced-out symbols aren't really a problem, the distance needed is likely obvious from the dance and the pace of the movements anyway. HLHJ (talk) 01:12, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
