Sorry I don't know how to use this
[edit][Originally this conversation was on Index Talk:THE PROVIDENCE GAZETTE AND COUNTRY JOURNAL August 9 1777 p 1.jpg]
I'm trying to follow the directions but they seem more for PDFs or DJVUs than page images. The other pages were uploaded as separate files:
- File:THE PROVIDENCE GAZETTE AND COUNTRY JOURNAL August 9 1777 p 1.jpg
- File:THE PROVIDENCE GAZETTE AND COUNTRY JOURNAL August 9 1777 p 2.jpg
- File:THE PROVIDENCE GAZETTE AND COUNTRY JOURNAL August 9 1777 p 3.jpg
- File:THE PROVIDENCE GAZETTE AND COUNTRY JOURNAL August 9 1777 p 4.jpg

- Omegatron: In this case, where your files are in multiple pages, you create an Index: without a file extension which holds those pages: Index:THE PROVIDENCE GAZETTE AND COUNTRY JOURNAL August 9 1777. As you can see at that index, the Page: names are the same as they would be (or are, for the first page). (Also, for future reference, you can use {{helpme}} if you have a question.) TE(æ)A,ea. - OK, User:TE(æ)A,ea., can you edit Help:Beginner's_guide_to_Index:_files#Creating_an_Index:_page_on_Wikisource to clarify that? — Omegatron (talk) 16:39, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
- Also, should [ Index:THE PROVIDENCE GAZETTE AND COUNTRY JOURNAL August 9 1777 p 1.jpg ] be deleted then? — Omegatron (talk) 16:41, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
- Omegatron: Yes, the index should be deleted. The procedure is not mentioned because the use of image-based indexes is discouraged, particularly because it is cumbersome to institute Index:es for them. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 17:20, 27 July 2024 (UTC)

- OK, but then this issue will happen whenever the original source is not a multi-page document. :/ If there is a recommended alternative way to do it, it should be in the beginner's instructions. — Omegatron (talk) 17:30, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
- Omegatron: Your approach is correct if the document is one page. The general procedure for image-based indexes is to instead convert them into a singular PDF or DJVU file, then use that singular file as a basis. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 17:48, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
