Approach to transcription

This transcription is of the 1579 first edition of The Shepheardes Calender, based on page images from the copy held by the Folger Shakespeare Library. The nature of the printed work is such that it is quite difficult to read. This is due to a combination of factors (not necessarily all present on the same page) including: dense, small type; blackletter; ligatures; italics; archaic spelling; the use of the long "s"; the routine use of "i" for "j" and "u" for "v"; and the occasional use of "vv" for "w".

The aim is to remain as faithful to the printed work as practicable but also to make things a bit easier for the reader. Consequently, the following practice has been adopted:—

a) the occasional instances of "vv" are replaced with "w";

b) the long "s" is not replicated; and

c) Blackletter is use only for small occurrences (e.g. emphasis, titles, catchwords, etc.). Large blocks of blackletter text (i.e. the 12 months) are rendered in normal font.

Other than these three items, the text is transcribed as printed (i.e. font sizes and styles, italics, spelling and punctuation, use of "i" for "j" and "u" for "v", ligatures, etc., are all retained). Chrisguise (talk) 09:20, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

Layout of 'Glosse' sections

Each of the 'months' has a 'glosse'. In these, most entries begin on a new line, but in some cases there are two or more on the same line. Each of the entries on these lines has been started on a new line. Chrisguise (talk) 12:10, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
