This translation first appeared in Lyra Davidica (1708) alongside the anonymous tune Easter Hymn, with which it is closely associated. A heavily edited version, with a complete rewrite of verses 2 and 3, appeared in John Arnold's The Compleat Psalmodist (1749); Arnold's revision is the text commonly used today.
Charles Wesley wrote a poem in 1739 based on this hymn called Christ the Lord Is Risen Today, which is now also a popular hymn.
