Traditional fairy tale written by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, published in 1740 in La Jeune Américaine et les contes marins (The Young American and Marine Tales). The most common versions told today are the 1756 French adaptation by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont and the 1889 English adaptation by Andrew Lang.
