Bateman, Alfred Edmund, of the Board of Trade (commercial department) since 1865, hon. secretary Statistical Society since 1882, secretary to royal commission for Anglo-French treaty negotiations 1881-2, author of various papers read before British Association, etc., a student of the Inner Temple 8 Nov., 1869 (then aged 25), called to the bar 18 Nov., 1872 (7th son of Rev. John Bateman, rector of East and West Leake, Notts); born 31 Aug., 1844; married 30 July, 1868, Edith Ellen, only child of James Eland Hobson, Esq., of Eaton Socon, Beds, and Kew, Surrey.
