Cockle, Sir James, F.R.S., chief justice of Queensland 1863-79, M.A., Trin. Coll., Camb., 1845, Charterhouse 1829-31, hon. treasurer Savage Club 1884, sometime president Queensland Philosophical Society, knighted 29 July, 1869, a student of the Middle Temple 12 April, 1838, called to the bar 6 Nov., 1846 (2nd son of James Cockle, of Great Oakley, Essex); born 14 Jan., 1819; married 22 Aug., 1855, Adelaide Catharine, eldest surviving dau. of Henry Wilkin, Esq., of Walton, Suffolk.
