Grant-Duff, Rt. Hon. Mountstuart Elphinstone, C.I.E., governor of Madras 1884, under-secretary of state for India 1868-74 and for the colonies 1880-1, M.P. Elgin Burghs 1857-81, lord rector of Aberdeen Univ. 1866-73, LL.B. London Univ. 1854 and a member of Convocation, M.A. Balliol Coll., Oxon (B.A. 1850), D.L. cos. Moray and Aberdeen, author of Studies in European Politics, Notes of an Indian Journey, A Political Survey, a student of the Inner Temple 24 Jan., 1848 (then aged i8), called to the bar 17 Nov., 1854 (eldest son of James Cuninghame Grant-Duff, Esq., of Eden, co. Aberdeen); born 21 Feb., 1829; married 13 April, 1859, Anna Julia (c.i.), only dau. of Edward Webster, Esq., of Ealing, Middlesex, and has issue.
