Laing, Samuel, M.P., M.A., St. John's Coll., Camb., 1835, B.A., second wrangler, fellow 1832, mathematical tutor, J.P., D.L. Orkney, M.P. Orkney and Shetland since Jan., 1873, Wick 1852–7, 1859–60, and 1865–8, financial secretary to the treasury 1859–60, finance minister in India 1861–3, a railway commissioner 1845, chairman of London and Brighton Railway Company 1848–55, 1867, of General Credit and Finance Company, and of Sydenham Crystal Company 1852–5, and deputy chairman of Great Eastern Railway Company, private secretary to Lord Taunton, then Mr. Labouchere, president of the Board of Trade, fellow of Geological, Ethnological, and Scottish Antiquaries' Societies, educated at Houghton-le-Spring Grammar School, a student of Lincoln's Inn 10 Nov., 1832 (then aged 20), called to the bar 9 June, 1837 (eldest son of Samuel Laing, of Papdale, Orkney); born 12 Dec., 1812; married , 1841, Mary, dau. of Capt. Cowan, R.N., and has issue.
