Makins, Col. William Thomas, M.P. South Essex since 1874, hon. col. 1st Essex artillery volunteers since 1864, M.A., Trin. Coll., Camb., 1865, from Harrow, a member of the Midland circuit, J.P., D.L. Essex, J.P. Oxon, on commission of lieutenancy for city of London, director of Great Eastern Railway Company, a student of the Middle Temple 14 Jan., 1859, called to the bar 26 Jan., 1863 (eldest son of Charles Makins, Esq., of London); born 16 March, 1840; married 3 July, 1861, Elizabeth, 2nd dau. of Lightly Simpson, Esq.
