de Wet, Sir Jacobus Petrus, B.A. London Univ. 1860, knighted 19 July, 1883, acting chief justice Ceylon 1882-3, member of Legislative Council Cape of Good Hope 1864-73, solicitor-general 1873-8, acting puisne judge supreme court 1878, recorder Griqualand West 1878-80 and acting administrator 1879-80, chief justice Transvaal 1881, etc., a student of the Inner Temple 21 Jan., 1859 (then aged 20), called to the bar 6 June, 1863 (eldest son of J. C. de Wet, of the Cape civil service); born , 1839; married 26 Nov., 1868, Pauline Harriette, dau. of William Trevor Law, Esq., of Rangoon and Moulmein; she died , (see Foster's Our Noble and Gentle Families).
