ADDISON, HENRY ROBERT. b. Calcutta; cornet 2 dragoon guards 12 July 1827; lieut. 15 March 1831 to 21 June 1833 when placed on half pay; began writing for the stage 1830; author of about 60 dramas and farces; lessee of Queen's theatre London Aug. 1836-1837; wrote many songs and articles in monthly magazines; edited Who's Who 1849-50; special correspondent of a morning paper at Paris exhibition 1867; deputy chairman of London steamboat company; author of about 12 novels and stories. d. BEAVAN, CHARLES (son of Hugh Beavan of Llowes, Radnorshire). b. March 1805; ed. at Aldenham and Caius coll. Cam., 22 wrangler 1829; B.A. 1829, M.A. 1832; barrister M.T. 25 June 1830, bencher 6 May 1873; practised in Chancery courts; an official examiner of Court of Chancery June 1866 to Jany. 1884 when office abolished; author of Reports of cases in Chancery argued and determined in the Rolls Court 36 vols. 1840-69, being the longest series of authorized reports ever published. d. 91 St. George's road, Pimlico, London 18 June 1884. BOLLAND, WILLIAM PROCTOR (2 son of Sir Wm. Bolland 1772-1840, Baron of Court of Exchequer). Educ. at Eton; barrister I.T. 6 May 1842; the original of Fred. Bayham in Thackeray's The Newcomes and of Wm. Bowker in Yates's Land at last. d. Clifton 10 June 1863 aged 47.

T. 25 Nov. 1842; revising barrister 1854; reporter for Law Journal Reports in Court of Exchequer 1855-64; stipendiary magistrate Stoke-upon-Trent 1864-70, for Sheffield 1870-74; legal adviser to comm. of Metropolitan Police 1874 to death; author of Prize essay on the laws for the protection of women 1854; Practice and evidence in the county courts Davis J. E. (Con.) 1855, 6 ed. 1887; The Criminal law consolidation statutes 1861; A manual of the law of registration and election 1868, 2 ed. 1879. d. suddenly at 4 Whitehall place, London 12 July 1887 in 70 year. GREAVES, Charles (eld. son of Charles Greaves d. 1829). b. Amwell, Herts. 19 Oct 1816; articled to J. M. Rendel, civil engineer, Plymouth, 1831-7; was in India 1842-7 when he made a survey for the Great Western railway of Bengal; engineer of East London waterworks 1851-75, in Oct. 1872 was presented with £1000 for his services in carrying out improved filter beds, pumping engines, etc. at cost of one million; engineer at Westminster chambers, Victoria st. London 1875-78; M. I. C. E. 2 May 1818; F. G. S.; F. R. Meteorol. soc. 1851, president 1879; had a meteorological observatory Surrey st. London 1878-83. d. Sunhill, Clevedon 4 Nov. 1883. GREAVES, Charles Sprengel (eld. son of Will. Greaves of Mayfield, Staffs. M. D. 1771 to 1848) b. 18 July 1801; ed, at Rugby and Queen's coll. Ox., B. A. 1823, M. A. 1825; barrister L. I. 22 Nov. 1827, bencher 15 April 1850, Q. C. 28 Feb. 1850; one of the secs, to criminal law commission 1878; author of The proper time for the publication of Banns 1867; A review of the statutes, rubrics and canons relating to vestments 1867; edited Sir W. O. Russell's Treatise on crimes and misdemeanours 2 vols., 3ed. 1843, 3 vols. 4 ed. d. 11 Blandford sq. London 3 June 1881.

HAYDN, Joseph Timothy (son of Thomas Haydn), b. Ireland 1786 or 1787; ed. abroad; originated at Dublin the Evening Mail 1823 and the Statesman and Patriot 1828, edited them some years; connected with the Limerick Times 1837-9; contributed to London newspapers and periodicals; engaged in record department of admiralty to death; edited S. Lewis's Topographical Dictionary 8 vols. 1842-7; his name given to the Haydn series of works of reference 1841 etc.; author of The Dictionary of Dates 1841, 19 ed. 1889; The book of dignities 1851, 2 ed. 1890; granted civil list pension of £25, 27 Dec. 1855; d. HOWELL, Thomas Jones (son of Thomas Bayly Howell 1768-1815, editor of the State Trials), b. 24 Dec. 1793; edited a Complete collection of State Trials vols. 22-33, 1815-26; barrister L. I. 17 May 1822; judge advocate and judge of vice-admiralty court at Gibraltar 1822; sec. to comrs. of colonial inquiry 1830; comr. for West India Islands relief 1832; inspector of factories 1833; d. 6 Eaton place west, London 4 June 1858.
