Native Flowers of New Zealand/Plate 20
A branched, woody shrub, 6 to 12 ft. high. This remarkable addition to the flora of New Zealand was collected by Dr. Hector on the Buller River, Nelson Province, 1872. The magnificent floral display of this species and others, such as S. glastifolius, with similar white rayed flowers, can only be seen to advantage in their natural humid habitats. It also grows between the river Mangles and the Tuangahua, and inland from Collinwood. (Buch). It flowers in January. These two Senecios were drawn and kindly contributed by Mr. John Buchanan, Geological Survey of New Zealand, by whom they have been already figured in Trans. New Zealand Institute.
A small woody shrub; branches covered with scales, formed by the sheathing cases of the old petioles. Allied to S. monroi and S. longifolia, but differing very much from both in habit of growth, very coriaceus leaves, with peculiar venation, and small robust coryrubs of few large heads of flowers.
