Preface to the dictionary.
This dictionary contains over 6000 different words. It also has more than 1500 sentences illustrating the meaning of the words. The most of the words the Chinese scholar will meet with, he will find in this vocabulary. Great care has been used to insert all the most common words. The compiler, from his own knowledge of the Chinese language, and by the use of all available helps, has taken great care to give the best definition possible, in Chinese, to each word. I. M. C.

玆集英字六千餘彙成字典 内又有千五百餘句寫隨釋 字中之意最屬切要習英文 者須熟護方能接口而應此 六千餘字乃是擇其要用者 故凡英俗之常談及英文之 當行者大半被採納焉間有 未被採納者亦可即此卷中 指其近似者参考而旁通矣 卷内所寫之英語字尾多從 簡畧或見他書所載有語意 與此卷相同而字尾獨畧異 者均可無疑盖字畧異而用 則一也
