J. SEIFERT
(Born 1901)

Of all the songs I heard men sing
In foreign countries far away,
The dearest are the songs our land
Has taught its people’s lips to play.
And when the child devoutly hears
Their words, their soft and plaintive fall,
Upon a mother’s lips there sounds
The loveliest sonnet of them all.

Of all the skies my eyes have seen
In foreign countries far away,
The sweetest skies of all are those
The vistas of our land display.
When with a child a mother plays,
And when she laughs, and when she cries,
The sweetest sky the child beholds
Is that within its mother’s eyes.
