CHILD STORIES AND PLAY
137

I sold my calf, and I bought me a cat;
A pretty thing she was, in my chimney
corner sat.

I sold my cat, and bought me a mouse;
He carried fire in his tail, and burnt down
my house.

Tom he was a piper's son,
He learned to play when
he was young,
And all the tune that
he could play
Was, "Over the
hills and far away,"
Over the hills, and a
great way off,
And the wind will blow
my top-knot off.

Now, Tom with his pipe
made such a noise

That he pleased both the girls and boys,
And they stopped to hear him play
"Over the hills and far away."
