bodies, one of them bright, the other dark, revolving round each other (Fig. 33). So long as the dark body is clear of the bright one, or behind it, the bright one shines steadily: but if the dark one gets in front we have an "eclipse" and the light dips.

This imagination or suspicion has been confirmed in a remarkable way by the spectroscope; and from being only a hypothesis has become a serious addition to our knowledge so serious that it has been honoured with an illustration in Punch by that clever artist Mr. E.
