So long as the dark body is clear of the bright one, or behind it, the bright one shines steadily: but if the dark one gets in front we have an "eclipse" and the light dips. This imagination or suspicion has been confirmed in a remarkable way by the spectroscope; and from being only a hypothesis has become a serious addition to our knowledge so serious that it has been honoured with an illustration in Punch by that clever artist Mr. E.
