Gruërie. as Grurie; also, the walke of a Gruyer. Droict de gruërie, & garenne. A royaltie belonging vnto some Lords Iusticers, who haue thereby the hunting, brousage, and pawnage of their subiects, or vassalls, woods.

Grurie: f. Is a right of Jurisdiction (most properly) in the woods, and forrests that belong to another man; and consists of the notice taken of, and of the amerciaments
and confiscations raised by, the offences committed therein. This right belongs wholly to the King in all the woods that be inclosed within his forrests, by reason whereof, the amerciaments and confiscations are euer adiudged vnto him, and the restitutions and dammages vnto the Proprietaries: (And yet if another haue so great a proportion of woods inclosed within, or ioyning vnto, the Kings forrests, that he must of necessitie keepe Officers to looke vnto them, and haue withall (by Prescription, or Charter) this right, or a Iurisdiction, within them, he may exercise it by his Officers, without the impeachment of the Kings;) also, the Office, or the walke, of a Gruyer. A principall forrester; a chiefe Warden, or Verderer; a maister Sergeant in a forrest; for this name is generall, and proper vnto all these seuerall officers; who in the title, and right thereof, belonging to the King, haue authoritie, to cause his Ordinances to be kept, & to punish the breakers thereof (as well within other Lords woods, as within his) either by setting amerciaments on their heads, or by confiscating of their cattell (the whole benefit whereof is, in most places, adiudged vnto him) yet if the fact committed (in his forrests) require a greater penaltie then 60 s. Tourn. they must referre it ouer to the censure of the maisters of the Forrests; also, as in Gruier. Gruyer: m. ere: f. Of a Crane; also, made (as a Hawke) onely for the Crane.
