ROUMANIAN GRAMMAR.
With regard to the verbs, the intonation rests upon the suffix:—
eŭ ar,eŭ aram,eŭ araĭ, etc.
If the suffix consists of more than one syllable, the accent is upon the first syllable of the suffix:
ararăm,arassem, etc.
Exceptions are:
- (1) The verbs ending in e short, in the first and second persons plural of the indicative present and subjunctive present, and in the plural of the imperative:—
credem, credeṭĭ; să credem, să credeṭĭ; credeṭĭ (voĭ), crédă (eĭ).
- (2) The third persons singular and plural of the indicative present, subjunctive present, and imperative of all verbs:—
el ară, el vede, el dórme, etc.
The Passive Voice.
For the passive voice we use the auxiliary verb a fi, ‘to be,’ by adding to each tense of this auxiliary the past participle of the verb we require. In this case the participle, being considered more as an adjective than as a verb, will agree with its subject in gender as well as in number.
A fi iubit, ‘To be loved.’
Indicative present, | Sunt | iubit, | iubită, | suntem, | iubitĭ, | iubite, |
Imperfect | Eram | iubit„ | iubită„ | eramŭ | iubitĭ„ | iubite„ |
Perfect | Am fost | iubit„ | iubită„ | eramŭ„ | iubitĭ„ | iubite„ |
