This saggestion was nade verbally, and there is a difference iu the uccounts given in regard to it by Sir Charles Bagot and M. Poletion. M. Poletiea, in a letter to Count Nesselrode of Noyem- her 3. 1528, snid:

Thus his understanding, as to the 135th meridian, was the same as Mr, Canning’, According to his understanding, the suggestion put both shores of Lynn Canal, throughout its whole extent, in Russian
territory. THE FIRST FORMAL PROPOSAL OF SIR CILLRLES RAGOT.
In the first formal proposition made by Sir Churles Bayot he proposed as the boundary: a Jine drawn throngh Chatham Straits to the heal of Lyon Canal, thenee north- west to the 140th degrees of longitude west of Greenwich, and then along that degree of longitude to the Polar Sea.’
This likewise assigned the entire coast. on the west side of Lyun

In the connter proposition of the Russinn plenipoteatiavies. the proposition made by Sir Charles Bagot was not even cntertatmed, The proposal was to begin at the southern extremity of Prince of Wales Island. and ** follow Portlhind Channel up to the mountains which horder the coust.°° That is, follow the cluannel to the end, and thence to the mountains. This meant continuity to that diree- tion, notil the line shonkd reach the mountains. The mountains meant are those ** which border the coast”; that is to suv, the coast of that channel. Tt seems to have been woderstood that the Port- lnnd Channel renched about the 56th dewree, for in the observations on the amended proposal of Sir Charles Bayot, the plenipoten- tiaries of Russia say:
