Devereux, Robert, 2nd Earl of Essex, master of the horse to Queen Elizabeth; matric. from Trinity Coll., Cambridge, 1 July, 1579, created M.A., Cambridge, 6 July, 1581, incorp. 11 April, 1588, (1s. Walter, Earl of Essex), Queen Elizabeth's favourite, distinguished himself at the battle of Zutphen and created a knight banneret by the Earl of Leicester, K.G., 1588, commander-in-chief by land and sea in an expedition against Spain 1597, earlmarshal of England 1597, chancellor of Cambridge May, 1598, lord-lieutenant of Ireland 1599, etc., executed on Tower Hill 25 Feb., 1600-1. Devereux, Robert, 3rd Earl of Essex, created M.A. from Merton Coll. 30 Aug., 1605, and also 31 Aug., 1636 (son of the last named), restored 1603, lieut.-general of the royal forces against the Scots 1639, lord chamberlain of the household 1641-2, captain-general of the parliamentary forces against the king 1642-5, died 14 Sept., 1646, buried in Westminster Abbey.
