Chester, Joseph Lemuel, created D.C.L. 22 June, 1881, editor of the Westminster Abbey registers and of many other genealogical works, and one of the founders of the Harleian Society; owing to his American nationality he was allowed to make very extensive collections from parish registers, and (of marriage licences) from the offices of the archbishop of Canterbury and bishop of London; he also was permitted to transcribe the Oxford matriculation register; his manuscripts are in duplicate; (son of Joseph Chester, of Norwich, Connecticut), born there 30 April, 1821, died unmarried in London 26 May, 1882.
