Of ANTS.

The Breaſt is oblong, has a Dent in the Middle, and the upper Part is round. On diſſecting it you will find within a ſtrong Muſcle which gives Life and Motion to this and moſt other Inſects. For it is obſervable that by preſſing this Part an Inſect is immediately deprived of Life; but if you ſeparate it from the Head and Body, it will prolong its Motion a great while after. The under Part is furniſhed with ſix Legs. The two firſt are ſhorteſt; the Middle ones are ſomewhat Longer; but the Hindmoſt exceed either. Each Leg has three Diviſions beſides a ſmall Lobe that unites it to the Breaſt. At the Extremities are two Hooks, and in the laſt Part of either Leg are ſeveral Joints. By this Artifice the Ant can adhere to Surfaces or move with great Facility and Quickneſs.

The Ligament that unites the Breaſt and Body in the Red Ant conſiſts of two Lobes ſomewhat round and divided in the Middle. A fine Thread connects it with the Breaſt, and another with the Body. In other Ants their appears but one Lobe between the Threads; which riſes higher, and is broader than the Lobes in Red Ants. This Species has alſo at the End of its Breaſt two ſharp Prickles that ſtand up like Thorns.
