THE ALIEN PKIOKY OF ANDWELL. 217 rule of St. Benedict was also that of the Cistercians, only more strictly enforced, and that in public documents it was so described, as appears in an attested copy, now in the Archives of Winchester College, of a bull of Pope Alexander III., by which he confirmed the Abbot and Convent of Tyrone in their privileges, and in the patronage of several monasteries, which w^cre to be governed according to the rule of St. Benedict, and the institution of the Abbey of Tyrone*. The bull is as follows : Alexander Episcopus, servus servorum Dei, Dilectis fihis, S. Abbati et fratribus monasterii de Tyronio Salutem, et Apostolicam benedictionem. In his, que a nobis previa ratione requiritis, peticioni v're benignum effectum impcrtiri debemus ; ut circa nos et eccl'iam fervencior fiat v're dilec- tionis intcgritas.
