WAYNE STEWART BIOGRAPHY
Wayne Stewart is a proven leader. For the past 26 years, he's been making Calgary a better city. On June 8th, 2010, he officially announced his candidacy for mayor of Calgary and a vision to make Calgary better for everyone.
Through an eclectic mix of education, experience and empathy, Wayne has developed highly prized analytical, conceptual and strategic abilities. He has a solid record and reputation for leading and solving difficult and complex issues; he is also renowned for getting people with widely varying opinions to work together toward a common goal. When Wayne gets involved, things get done.
Wayne's extensive experience includes working with Shell Canada as a senior manager in marketing, product research, human resources and public affairs. For the past two decades, Wayne has had a second career in the non-profit sector. He was executive director of the Calgary Foundation, where in 4 short years he helped build the fund to $52 million from $10 million. He was project director of HomeFront and most recently president and CEO of the Calgary Homeless Foundation, where he developed Calgary's Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness. Wayne has worke with several other charities on a range of issues and chaired the Alberta Secretariat for Action on Homelessness from July 2009 to April 2010.
Currently, Wayne is executive-in-residence at Mount Royal University, a special advisor to Imagine Canada and a warden in his church. Plus he is co-founder of the highly successful Executive Directions program, which coaches non-profit sector leaders in all aspects of their work.
A life-long learner, Wayne has degrees in engineering, political science, business, religious studies and philosophy. He has taught chemistry in England, environmental issues in Uganda and leadership at the University of Alberta.
Adding to his impressive resume, Wayne has authored two books. "Citizenship in the 21st Century, Lessons from the Present" was published in 2005 and is a collection of stories on and lessons from public service. In his second book, "Things I Know," published in 2010, Wayne shares his insight and wisdom about working with others and in the nonprofit sector.
Born and raised on an Ontario farm, Wayne has lived in Calgary since 1984. He is married to Martha, and they have three children and three grandchildren.
