strategic area are a basic source of power for the industries and the chief source of fuel for electric powerplants. There are numerous refineries, extensive storage facilities for refined petroleum products (capacity more than 3.5 million barrels), and major ammunition storage depots in the strategic area. Also in the area are 15 large, permanent-surface airfields.
2. East Berlin
The significance of this strategic area (Figure 13) derives from its functions as a political, industrial, transportation, and telecommunications center and from its sensitive position around the West Berlin enclave. East Berlin (Figure 14), the capital and largest urban center in East Germany (population estimated at 1.1 million) is the most significant domestic and international telecommunications center in the country and serves as a control and coordination point for telephone, telegraph and radio communications. It is second only to the Saxony strategic area in manufacturing importance and is a leading producer of electrical, telecommunication, and electronic
