26. — Villagers merry-making
Described in Smith’s Catalogue (Supplement, p. 95, n ° Sal as follows : « A company of about nineteen persons assembled in a large room, many of whom have their attention riveted on a couple who are dancing to the music of a fiddle, played by an old fellow mounted on a stool. Behind the dancing female is a merry boor, endeavourin to embrace a woman. More towards the front sits a man, wearin a red jacket and a black cap; on the opposite side are a woman in a blue dress with a child by her side, and a man standing near, leaning on a settle. Beyond these is a group, composed of two men and a woman; and in this part may be noticed a boor con- ducting a female down some steps from an adjoining room. »
