THE CHRONICLES OF EARLY MELBOURNE.

A match in return was played between the Married and Single on ist February, 1840. with the following result:— BACHELORS-First Innings... Second ,,

39 I 180—219 !

BENEDICKS—First Innings ,, Second ,,

90 52—142

T h e Bachelors winning by 77. T h e play was at the old place at Batman's Hill, but as the weather was unfavourable, and it blew a gale throughout the day, the enjoyment was very m u c h lessened by the high wet grass and the sticky soil. The " W h o shall," or conquering match, came off on the 7th March, and the (following report is transcribed from an old '40 newspaper:— " C R I C K E T . — T h e third match between the Married M e n and Bachelors of Melbourne ended in favour of the Single beating their opponents in one innings with 93 notches to spare. T h e bowling and batting of M r . Powlett were beyond all praise; indeed, this gentleman's playing would do infinite credit to any cricket club in the world. T h e batting of Mr. T. F. Hamilton, too, was equally fine. " T o m " was the first to go in, and the last to come out, and was not idle during his innings. While the Single m e n can bring to the scratch such players as Messrs. Powlett and Hamilton, the Married folks have not the slightest chance with them. T h e fielding on both sides was m u c h better than formerly, and here, if anything, the Benedicks had the advantage; butfieldingwell without good batting and bowling is of no use. T h e day was remarkably fine, and the players were honoured with the presence of several ladies." T h e Bachelors w o n in a single innings, in which they m a d e 197, against 104, the product of the double effort of the Married. A s the score upon this occasion is the first ever printed in the colony, it is worthy of preservation as a rare historical stray :— B A C H E L O R S — F I R S T INNINGS.

Of the above the only two now in the colony are Mr. Robert Russell, a Benedick, and the H o n . T. F. Hamilton, a bachelor on the day of the match; but the H o n . " T o m " soon after abandoned his state of " single blessedness," and passed along the risky sacra via by which pilgrims are admitted to the elysium of matrimony.
