of that Order, 22 May 1611.([1]) He m. in or before 1590 Mary, da. of Sir Thomas Walsingham, of Scadbury in Chislehurst, Kent, by Dorothy, da. of Sir John Guldeford. He d. 2 Dec. 1624, and was bur. (in state) at Laughton. Inq. p.m. at Lewes 5 Sep. 1625. Will (directing his burial to be at St. Michael's, Lewes), dat. 14 April 1620, pr. 5 Feb. 1624/5. His widow was bur. 7 March 1634, at Laughton.
II. 1624. Sir Thomas Pelham, Bart. [1611], of Halland in Laughton aforesaid, only s, and h., bap. 22 Sep. 1597, at East Hoathley, Sussex; being 27 at his father's death, when he suc. to the Baronetcy, 2 Dec. 1624, He had previously been M.P. for East Grinstead, 1621-22 for Sussex, 1624-25, 1625, April to May 1640, again 1640 till secluded in 1648, and 1654 till his death. He m. firstly, in or before 1623, Mary, da. and coheir of Sir Roger Wilbraham, Master of Requests, by Mary, da. of Edward Barber, of Tew, co. Somerset, Serjeant at Law. She was bur. 7 March 1634, at Laughton. He m. secondly, in 1637, Judith, widow of John Shurley, of Lewes, 1st da. of Sir Robert Honywood, of Pett in Charing, co. Kent, by Alice, da. of Sir Robert Barnham. She, who was b. 5 July 1602, at Hollingbourne, co. Kent, was bur. 21 Nov. 1638, at Laughton. He m. thirdly, Margaret, da. of Sir Henry Vane, Treasurer of the Household, by Frances, da. of Thomas Darcy, of co. Essex. He, who lived a retired life, during the Usurpation, was bur. 28 Aug. 1654, at Laughton, aged 57. Will dat. 13 Jan. 1652/3, pr. 13 Nov. 1654. His wife, who probably survived him, was living Jan. 1652/3.
III. 1654. Sir John Pelham, Bart. [1611], of Halland in Laughton aforesaid, s. and h. by first wife, b. about 1623, being aged 9 and upwards in 1633; suc. to the Baronetcy in Aug. 1654; was M.P. for Hastings, Oct. 1645 till secluded in 1646; for Sussex, 1654-55, 1656-58, 1660, as also in six succeeding Parls. till 1698. He m. 20 Jan. 1647, at Penshurst, Kent, Lucy, 2d da. of Robert (Sydney), 2d Earl of Leicester, by Dorothy, da. of Henry (Percy), Earl of Northumberland. She was bur. 19 Oct. 1685 at Laughton. He d. at his residence at Halland, and was bur. 20 Jan. 1702/3 at Laughton aforesaid, aged about 80. Will dat. 16 Nov. 1702, pr. 3 March 1702/3.
IV. 1703. Sir Thomas Pelham, Bart. [1611], of Halland in Laughton aforesaid, s. and h., b. about 1650; M.P. for East Grinstead, 1678 and 1678/9; for Lewes, 1679—1702; and for Sussex, 1702-05; a promoter of the Revolution; a Commissioner of the Customs, 1689; a Lord of the Treasury, 1689-94, and, again, 1701-02; suc. to the Baronetcy, Jan. 1702/3, and was cr., 16 Dec. 1706, BARON PELHAM OF LAUGHTON, co. Sussex. He m. firstly, at St. Giles' in the Fields, 18 March 1679/80 (Lic. Vic. Gen.), he about 26, and she about 15), Elizabeth, da. and h. of Sir William Jones, of Ramsbury, Wilts, Attorney General, by Elizabeth, da. of Edmund Alleyne, of Hatfield Peverell, co. Essex. She d. s.p.m. in childbed in London, and was bur. 13 Oct, 1681 at Laughton. He m. secondly (Lic. Vic. Gen. 21 May 1686, he about 33 and she about 18), Grace, sister of John, Duke of Newcastle, 4th and yst. da. of Gilbert (Holles), 3d Earl of Clare, by Grace, da. of the Hon. William Pierrepont. She d. 13 Sep. 1700 and was bur. at Laughton. He d. of apoplexy, at Halland aforesaid, 23 Feb. and was bur. 8 March 1711/2 at Laughton. Will pr. March 1712.
V. 1712. Thomas (Pelham-Holles, formerly Pelham), 2d BARON Pelham of Laughton [1706] and 5th Baronet [1611], s. and h., b. took the additional name of Holles on succeeding to the estates of that family, by the death of his maternal uncle John, Duke of Newcastle, 15 July 1711, and suc. to the titles, as above, 8 March 1711/2. He was cr., 19 Oct. 1714, EARL OF CLARE, co. Suffolk, etc., and 11 Aug. 1715, DUKE OF NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, etc. There being, however, after the death, 6 March 1754, of his br., the Rt. Hon. Henry Pelham, no heir to succeed to his peerage dignities he was cr., 17 Nov. 1756, DUKE OF NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LYNE, with a spec. rem. in favour of the family of Clinton, and was also cr., 4 May 1762, BARON PELHAM OF STANMER, co. Sussex, with a spec. rem. in favour of his heir male Thomas Pelham, of Stanmer aforesaid. He d. s.p. 17 Nov, 1768 aged 75, when the Barony
