TAUTOLOGY, in Grammar, a needless Repetition of the same Thing in different Words.
Some People, particularly the Jesuits, write and pronounce it Taftology. The Difference arises from the different Pro- nunciation of the Greek upsilon in (Greek characters) The modern Greeks, 'tis true, pronounce the (Greek characters) as f and 'tis argued the Ancients did the like: But as Cullom is the Standard of a Language, this Plea avails but little with Regard to the English.
