DOUFFET (Doufeet, Doofeet, Duffeit),
GERAERT, born at Liége, in 1594, died
there in 1660. Flemish school; history and
portrait painter, pupil of Rubens. Went
in 1614 to Italy, where he devoted himself
so entirely to the study of the great Italian
masters that the influence of Rubens is traceable
only in the warm flesh-tones of his well-drawn
portraits. He returned home in 1622.

DOUVEN, JAN FRANS VAN, born at
Roermonde in 1655, died in Düsseldorf in
1727. Flemish school; portrait painter,
pupil of Gabriel Lambertin. Called to Düsseldorf
by the Elector Johann Wilhelm, who
took him to Vienna and recommended him
to the Emperor Leopold. Having successfully
painted the portraits of the Emperor
and Empress, he received many orders from
royal personages and nobles. His portraits
