Born May 16th, 1849; succeeded his father in 1863 ; was educated at Eton, and at Balliol College, Oxford (B.A. 1873) ; is a Dep. Lieut, and a Magistrate of Fifeshire. Bro Alters living, Robert Preston, heir presumptive, b. 1851 ; was educated at Eton, and at Balliol College, Oxford. Frederick John, b. 1854. Sister's living, Elma, b. 1842, m. 1864, the 5th Baron Thurlow. Louisa Elizabeth, b. 1856. We have been. Seat, Broomhall, Dunfermline, Flfe&hire. Clubs, Devonshire, White's. 2,'LGrIN AND KINCARDINE, Earl of, His lordship's predecessor was his father, James, K T. G.C.B. 8th Earl of Elgin. He was b. July 20, 1811, and succeeded his father, Nov. 14, 1841. This distinguished nobleman held many important offices abroad, some of them at times of extreme danger ; he was for some time Governor and Capt -Gen. of Jamaica, Gov -Gen. in Canada, and High Commissioner in China, and greatly dis- tinguished himself by securing peace with the latter country, and obtaining large compen- sation from the Chinese Government. He was appointed Governor-General of India. 1862, and died in 1863, while holding that high office. He m 1st. April 22, 1841, Elizabeth Mary, daughter of C. L. dimming Bruce, Esq. of Roseisle, (she d. 1843), and by 1 er had issue, two daughters; 2ndly, Nov. /, 1846, Lady Mary Louisa Laribtoi:, daughter ol the 1st Earl of Durham ; and d. Nov. 20, 1863, having had issue from his last marriage four sons and one daughter. ELGIN AND KINCARDINE, Countess of, MARY LOUISA LAMBTON, daughter of the 1st Earl of Durham, b. 1819 : m. 1846, the (8th) Earl of Elgin and (12th) Earl of Kincardine, K.T. G.C.B. who d. 1863. Residence, same as the Earl of Elgin and Kincardine. ELI BANK, BARON. (MURRAY.) MONTOLIECJ Fox OLIPHANT MURRAY, 10th Baron, in the peerage of Scotland, and a Baronet. Born April 27th, 1840; succeeded his father in 1871. Entered the Royal Navy 1854, an d became Lieut. 1862; appointed 1st Lieut. H.M.S. " Se- rapis" 1867, and retired as Commander 1870; has the Chinese Medal; is a Dep. Lieut, and a Magistrate for Peebles-shire : married (1868) Blanche Alice, eldest daughter of the late Edward John Scott, By virtue and faith. Esq., of Portland Lodge, Southsea, and has issue, living.
