Born Feb. 25th, 1801 ; succeeded his father in 1851 ; entered the Army and became Lieut. 1819, Capt. 1824, Major, 1826, Lieut.-Col. 1829; Major- Gen. 1854, Lieut.- Gen. I860, and Gen. 1868; commanded the 83rd Foot in Canada, 18378; the Bombay division of the Army of the Punjaub, at Goojerat, 1849, and all sub- sequent operations, for which he received a medal and clasps; also commanded a division of the Indian army, 1853; is a Dep. Lieut, and a Magistrate for (co.) Mid- Lothian, and Col. Commandant of the 60th Rifles, and President of the Council ot Royal Archers. Brothers living, Robert, heir presumptive, b. 1803; was sometime Storekeeper General of the Navy. 'Residence, 7, Portugal-street, Grosvenor-square, W. The Rev. Charles, b. 1806, m. 1833. Creation, Viscount Melville of Melville, (co.) Edinburgh, and Baron Duneira of (co.) Perth, in the peerage of the United Kingdom, 1802. &rms, Argent : A lion rampant, gules, within a bordure, azure, charged with three boars' heads, or. (Crest, A lion's head affrontee, gules, encircled by a bush of holly, pro- per, fructed, gules. Supporters, Dexter, a tiger reguardant, proper; sinister, a stag, proper, attired, argent. MELVILLE, Viscount, His lordship's predecessor was his father, Robert, K.T. F.R.S. 2nd Viscount Melville. He was b. March 14, 1771, and succeeded his father. May 27, 1811; was General of the Royal Archers, Lord Privy Seal of Scotland; Chan- cellor of St. Andrew's University, and Governor of the Bank of Scotland: m. Aug. 29, l/;A Anne, daughter of the late R. H. Saunders, Esq. M.D. (she d. 1841) ; and d. June 10, Ib51, having had issue four sons and two daughters.
